SafeEthernet
Communication in the Networked Age
SafeEthernet: SIL 3 and SIL 4 (CENELEC) Compliant Data Transmission
Today, more and more plants are built with a distributed structure. To comply with the highest safety standards, you must not only ensure that your safety systems themselves are protected, but also that data transmission is secured. This is why HIMA developed SafeEthernet: a transmission protocol that has now become the standard in many industries and applications. It is based on standard Ethernet infrastructure and fulfils all industry requirements, including SIL 3 and SIL 4 (CENELEC).
Benefits
Fast and Safe
-
High Profitability
You use cost-effective standard components from any manufacturer and can continue to use existing networks. -
Maximum Flexibility
Commissioning can be carried out in stages and customized remote maintenance concepts can be implemented. -
Easy Integration
SafeEthernet can be integrated into existing Ethernet networks, even if these are used for non-safety-related communication. -
Certified Safety
Data transmission via SafeEthernet is TÜV-certified to SIL 3 and SIL 4 (CENELEC). A redundant structure is possible, as is reloading during operation.
Features
Distributed, but Secure
In centralized applications, short response times are not difficult to achieve. However, with SafeEthernet, you achieve the highest speeds even in distributed, networked plants – regardless of how far apart these are, or the topology in which your infrastructure is configured. Moreover, you can integrate the transmission of secure and non-secure data in a standard Ethernet network – without compromising security.
Because SafeEthernet is based on the widely used Ethernet protocol, you can use cost-effective standard components. And for data transmission, you have the flexibility to select a medium:
- Copper cable
- ISDN
- SHDSL
- Fiber-optic cable
- Satellites
- WLAN
With the SafeEthernet protocol, you can network the following controllers:
- Up to 255 connections between HIMax, HIQuad X, and HIMatrix systems*
- Up to 64 connections from HIQuad systems to HIMax, HIQuad X, and HIMatrix systems**
* To increase the volume of data, up to 64 connections between two controllers are possible. 65.534 participants with 255 RIO each can be active in a single network.
** 99 HIQuad systems can be active in a single network.
